Top 4 Aeropress Recipes

The Aeropress is one of my favorite brewing devices because of its simplicity. But even in its simplicity, comes a vast array of ways to make coffee. There are probably thousands of recipes, each using varying temperatures, quantities of coffee and brew methods of the Aeropress.

Here are my 4 favorite Aeropress Recipes.

James Hoffman Recipe

This had to be at the top of the list because, well, views. But, it’s also a simple recipe that produces a bright, rich cup.

Coffee: 11g (Works best with lighter roast)

Grind: Fine to Medium (12 on a Baratza Encore)

Heat your water up to 210° F

  1. Put brewer in standard brewing position and add your 11g of coffee

  2. Start timer, add 200g of water

  3. Immediately place the plunger on top of the brewer. This creates a vaccuum seal and prevents the coffee from dripping through.

  4. Wait 2 minutes.

  5. Press gently, it should take about 30 seconds. As Hoffman notes, you shouldn’t need to use all of your body weight. If you get too much resistance, adjust your grind size slightly coarser.

Coffee Compass Recipe

This was an interesting one. I generally prefer inverted method compared to the standard method, but this one might be one of my favorites on this list.

Coffee: 15g

Grind: Medium (20/21 on a Baratza Encore)

Heat your water: 208° F

  1. Place two rinsed aeropress filters into the Aeropress. This helps reduce the sentiment that ends up in your coffee.

  2. Add 225g of water and start a timer. This will pretty much fill the brewer, so be careful. Place the plunger on the brewer.

  3. At 1:00, remove the plunger and gently break the crust with a spoon. Then, place it back on the plunger.

  4. Wait until 4 minutes. Slowly plunge in about 30 seconds.

  5. Clean up and pour.

Rule of Thirds Recipe

I rarely do recipes that require adding water after the brew, but I liked this one.

Coffee: 20g

Grind: Medium (22 on a Baratza Encore)

Heat your water to 201° F

  1. Invert Aeropress, put 20g of medium ground coffee in Aeropress and tap to level, and put 2 filters in the filter cap and rinse. Preheat mug as well.

  2. Start the timer and pour 50g of water, stir until all the grounds are saturated, wait 30s

  3. Pour up to 100g, wait until 50s.

  4. Pour to 225g, put filter cap on Aeropress

  5. At 1:30s, invert Aeropress and plunge for 30s-40s (2:00-2:10)

  6. Add 30g of just off-boil water to completed coffee and stir

Wendellin Van Bunnik Recipe

Wendellin won the World Aeropress Championship in 2019. But, this isn’t her winning recipe. This one, however, she labelled as her go-to which I think actually holds even more. So, here we go.

  1. Use 16 grams of coarsly ground, fresh coffee

  2. Rinse 2 paper filters

  3. prepare for inverted brewing

  4. pour 230 grams of hot water (94-96 degrees C) and start a timer

  5. stir 5 times & add filtercap

  6. extract for 1 min

  7. flip & press in 30 seconds
